So i have been bad about updating this thing recently, though i have been online to read everyone elseapos;s posts. things are going well here. grad school isnapos;t really much harder than the grad classes i took at UW. i find i have a lot of free time here actually, more so than at UW, so i am able to practice the clarinet and work out and get lots of sleep, etc. itapos;s exciting to think that i can do well here, among some of the best students in the world. (half of Princetonapos;s grad students are international. cool eh?) actually, though as recently as a month ago the prospect of general exams (quals) scared the crap out of me, iapos;m kind of excited for it now. as crazy as it seems i am excited for the challenge of being asked to prove my fundamental knowledge of...everything. courses here are very much focused on knowing the fundamentals of everything in depth, rather than learning a lot of new material. all the classes i have are starting from the very beginning of their respective topic, ie first quarter of prereq material from UW. itapos;s interesting.

but yeah, this feeling of excitement is quite strange. who gets excited for a test? hahaha. it reminds me of how some people have suggested in the past that i am arrogant. i donapos;t think i exude arrogance or act that way in my interactions with others (usually) but i could see why people might say that. i heard through the grapevine that one of my professors thought that about me. i suppose that stems from the fact that at least in school, i am always supremely confident in my abilities. but i think all people who succeed in their respective fields must have this confidence, or arrogance. just like top athletes always believe they can win, i simply believe that i can learn almost anything and solve almost any problem. arrogance? maybe. but maybe thatapos;s what it takes to get to the top.

in other news, there was a series of HILARIOUS headlines on the seattle times main page today.
